I was looking for a job when I found a sustainability manager position which was the dream job. Unfortunately, I did not get the position and my immigration status at a time of high political presidential debates will not help to get any other position like this. The only managerial position I may have are those I create myself which is certainly not the best one, but it is a position without any frustration at all. I have a project, I build my project and I promote my project. Done.
While I was looking for a job, I wanted to show my skills on various designing software, but as I have additional skills, I wanted to show those skills with my drawings. When I wrote both articles on Qnergy and Puxin, I have been trying to imagine how, as a manager, I would promote those technologies. The logic would be to find the right prospects, then where do I find the prospects? I found the answer on the website of the city hall of Las Vegas. Dozens of maps are archived there which could be analyzed and drafted to talk to a public. My public would be the politicians, casinos, decision makers, investors, architects, contractors and the customers of Las Vegas.
Time is money and any analyse of data must be worse it because it takes time, it is fastidious, costly and there shall be a purpose for it. I shall also keep in mind that the first product to sell is me, my skills and my experience. I use Sketchup, Blender, Unity and Photoshop. I have chosen those softwares for a lot of various reasons that I explain here:
I have a good experience for reading C# scripts, JavaScript, and HTML. Also I cannot write a script from scratch, I know where to look for a script, how to read it, copy and compile. I arrived in the United-States on February 2015. I had my work permit on December 16, 2016. I had my social security number in January, and since I have been looking for a job, I had only one real interview. Being self employed for dozen years and starting a new life as a immigrant is not easy. From April 2016 until now, I have been learning Blender and Unity and I have now an advanced beginner level which means that I am slow, I still need to look for references, but I can manage a full project from scratch up to the final web publication. I can also help other people with their projects, but there is nothing spontaneous. I need to think a lot before I do. As a consequence, my work is cheap but I take it as an opportunity to progress.
In a job fair, someone told me that I was a "scientific data professional" and I found it fair. Also if I am graduated in architecture, I have worked on several projects as an analyst. I don't usually follow any routine to analyse any data. There are two major ways to look for information which is qualitative of quantitative, but the routines usually hide the most important asset of data collection if we do not make it easy to read and to understand. My expertise is to analyse, but also to communicate, make the information more accessible. Drawings and modelings are two means of communication that I use very often.
As a sales person, I would use a map to look for prospects, but once I met my prospects, I would probably find it hard to get my bests arguments heard. I am not a commercial person, I would not sell anything that I would not trust. I am more like a prescriber who knows a product very well, who likes the product and who would promote it. By the way, I would win money on my sales but I would not sell to make money. I would rather do something else.
I had a customer once to whom I did not sell anything. He was a farmer, he wanted to install solar panels on his farm and came to me for some advice. He had heard of me by a friend who had bought solar panels for the house. I made the installation with a carpenter, a roofer and an electrician. It was a time when issues on solar panels were too many to be honest. I wanted to prove that a good job made by real good contractors could be less expensive and more secure than a job made by solar companies who are neither carpenter, neither roofer and have a limited knowledge of electricity. They also have a limited knowledge of insurances, risks and maintenance, what may cost a lot of bad issues for the buyer.
I made a full study of the costs and revenues for the 20 years production of the solar panels, and as a result, the farmer did not go through this project, because his main job is to be a farmer, not to be an energy supplier. When I would meet this customer later, he would cross the street and talk to me warmly to say thank you. He usually had many stories about farmers of his neighborhood crawling with debts because of bad investments in solar panels. While they were using their credit for solar panels, their capacity for additional credits had collapsed and when the need for new machinery and tractors came, they could not afford to buy. Unfortunately, solar energy is taking many credits from the people that they cannot invest elsewhere and I believe that this issue should raise more attention.
Anyway, the solar panel popularity is huge and has taken roots for many years. The promotion different solutions may take time and it is not easy. The city of Las Vegas is a land of opportunities, but it is also a city centered on herself, difficult to access and difficult to deal with. When came the idea to find prospects, I had few things in mind:
- to find the good prospect and not to lose time with the bad ones,
- to come with visible arguments that the people would easily verify,
- to not focus on the Strip which is too "fashionable" (the Strip leaders follow the others, they don't make the game and they have no willing to make the game on sustainability),
- to be seen even by people who do not look for a specific product,
- to be interesting so that the people would talk and then discover what we are doing,
- to show the integrity of the project, because even I am small, I am not too small and this is my best argument to recommend a product,
- have the people of Las Vegas know me and the products I would promote.
The drawing of a map was the immediate consequence of my concepts, because to know a product and to value the capacity of this product on a large scale, we must draw the scale at first. Here comes the map of Green Las Vegas. I have scanned the city scaled 1:5000. The map is 1076.39 sqf and could be print in a room of 32.80 x 32.80 feet. On the map, I show my analyse of the prospects accordingly to the different products. My main products are Stirling energy, biogas and hardwoods. I also develop concept projects which are more personal.
The drawing of a map meet with many challenges which could show my own experience. I decided to use Unity 3D to explain the map and communicate on the products. The development of a map with Unity 3D involves the use of Sketchup, Blender and Photoshop which was my main goal. The publication of the map on the web was challenging too but it was the complete achievement of my goals..
As a conclusion, I have designed the draft of the project which I have published online and I have decided to publish updates and explanations. There is only one name to remember: INNOVTOUR, the brandmark of this project. The frame of the blog will be the timeline to share the evolution of the project. You can subscribe to the newsletter to follow our updates. You can also sponsor this project and start to buy virtual parcels.
